How to Stick to Your 2023 Goals (New Year’s Resolutions)

We all had great intentions but abandoning our New Year’s resolutions is so common that we commemorate two dates in the middle of January, “Ditch New Year’s Resolutions Day” and “Quitter’s Day.”

Don’t fall victim to Quitters Day. It's not too late to get back on track and make 2023 the year you achieve your goals. Here are three tips to help you do just that:

Sustainable

Keep your goal sustainable. A successful day can lead to a large amount of momentum, but it’s important to consider if this success can remain continuous. For example, if your goal is to workout every day, make sure that it is something your body can handle and that you have the time to fit it into your schedule. If it's not, consider adjusting the goal to something more manageable. If you intend to run two miles each day, taking a leisurely afternoon stroll is better than not exercising at all.

Frictionless

Remove friction from attaining your goal. One of the reasons many of us fail to achieve our goals is because there are too many obstacles in the way. Whether it's a lack of time, energy or resources, it's important to identify what's getting in the way and remove it. If your goal is to hit the gym four times a week but you find yourself too tired after work, consider going before work in the morning. Thinking about going on a run tomorrow, try setting out your running attire the night before.

Supportive

Create a support group. Achieving a goal can be challenging, and it's important to have people in your life who will encourage and support you. Whether it's a workout buddy or a mentor, having someone to hold you accountable can make all the difference. Join a fitness class. You’ll meet new people, too.

Remember, it's never too late to start working towards your goals. Small, consistent steps are better than big, infrequent ones.

So, if you've fallen off track, don't beat yourself up. Instead, take a step back, reassess your goal, and come up with a plan to make it sustainable and frictionless. With the right mindset and support, you can achieve anything you set your mind to.
